VARIVAX III (Chickenpox) Vaccine Clinic in Toronto

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus called varicella-zoster.
The virus is usually spread through:

  • Direct contact with blisters that form on the skin
  • The air, by coughing or sneezing

Infected persons often spread chickenpox even before the rash appears. They are considered contagious from two days before the rash appears until all the blisters have scabbed over. Children may be infected without you even realizing it.

Those with the following conditions are often at risk:

  • Middle ear infection
  • Necrotizing fasciitis (flesh-eating disease)
  • Osteomyelitis (inflammation of the bone)
  • Bacteremia (blood infection)
  • Endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart)
  • Pneumonia
  • Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain)

Chickenpox may also be associated with other serious complication such as:

  • Children who have never had chickenpox.
  • Children who haven't been vaccinated against it.

Chickenpox may also increase the risk of flesh-eating disease. Chickenpox can be particularly serious threatening to infants, adults, or anyone with a weakened immune system.

Canadian expert such as: The Canadian Paediatric Society, the College of Family Physicians and Health Canada recommend vaccinating children 12 months or older against chickenpox. They believe that the risks of chickenpox can be serious. VARIVAX III is currently available to help protect children age 12 months and older against chickenpox.
