Travellers' diarrhea is the most common medical problem among travelers to developing countries. The most common case is bacteria called enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC). Up to 50% of travelers to developing countries will have diarrhea at least once during a 2-week vacation. High risk destinations include Mexico and Latin America.
SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:
- Frequent, loose bowel movements
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea
- Bloating
- Travellers' diarrhea can begin suddenly. It can be hard to cope with in an unfamiliar place. It usually lasts 3-5 days but can last 2 weeks or more
- People are more likely to get travellers' diarrhea from consuming contaminated or uncooked food and water.
HOW DOES TRAVELLER'S DIARRHEA SPREAD?
You can get sick by consuming contaminated food or water.
HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF?
Vaccination with Dukoral reduces your risk of becoming ill with travellers' diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) or cholera caused by V. cholerae.
To get your shot for DUKORAL vaccination call the Toronto Travel Vaccine and Immunization Clinic at: 416-461-2419.
