Sun Burn & Heat Stroke Travel Medical Clinic in Toronto
Many Canadians travel to find warmth and sunshine, so we tend to overdo it when we arrive. Take it easy. Remember these pointers to avoid sunburn and the ill effects of heat.
WHAT CAN I DO TO AVOID SUNBURN?
Avoid direct sun from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Have fun in the shade. Wear sunscreen. Sunglasses, a hat and protective clothing do help. Some medicines make you sensitive to the sun. Check with our travel doctor at the Toronto travel vaccination and immunization clinic.
HOW DO I PROTECT MYSELF FROM THE HEAT?
Drink lots of water; avoid alcohol and caffeine. Wear loose, light-coloured clothing. Take it slow and don't overdo exercise, especially at midday. Seniors and people who are overweight or who don't exercise regularly are at the most risk of overdoing it in the heat.
HOW DO I PROTECT MYSELF FROM THE HEAT?
- Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more
- Put it on 20 minutes before going out
- Reapply after swimming and exercise
- Wear it even if you don't expect to be in direct sun - who knows what adventures your trip might bring!
