Polio IPV Vaccine Clinic in Toronto
All infants should get this vaccine unless they have a medical reason not to. A primary series of IPV consists of three properly spaced doses, usually given at 2 months, 4 months, and 6-18 months. A booster dose is given at 4-6 years (before or at school entry, unless the primary series was given so late that the third dose was given on or after the fourth birthday.) Polio still exists in parts of Africa and Asia and can easily be imported. When the effort to eliminate polio from the world is successful, polio vaccine will become part of history. But we are not at that point yet.
Should adults get vaccinated against polio? Certain adults are at increased risk of infection, including travelers to areas were polio is common, laboratory workers who handle specimens that might be excreting wild polioviruses in their stool (such as those caring for recent immigrants from central Africa or parts of Asia.)
To get your shot for POLIO IPV vaccination call the Toronto Travel Vaccine and Immunization Clinic at: 416-461-2419.
