Caused by several types of meningococcal bacteria, it can result in meningitis, a potentially fatal infection of the brain and the spinal cord. The early flu-like symptoms of the infection, which can include fever, headache and neck stiffness, can make it hard to tell meningitis form less serious diseases. You can become ill very quickly form meningitis. You can get sick through contact with an infected person. Meningococcal bacteria are spread via coughing, sneezing, kissing and sharing of drinks, cigarettes or items such as lipstick. The risk of transmission is especially high in overcrowded areas. Vaccination with MENOMUNE -A/C/Y/W-135 reduces your risk of becoming ill with meningococcal disease caused by A, C, Y and W-135 meningococcal bacteria.
