ALTITUDE SICKNESS Medical Clinic in Toronto

Altitude Sickness can occur when you go 2100m (7,000 ft) above sea level, particularly if you make a rapid climb above 3000m (10,000ft). Common symptoms are headaches, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and insomnia. Serious and even fatal symptoms are possible. Traveler with heart or lung disease may be highly sensitive to changes in altitude.

What can I do?

Ask our doctor about drugs to prevent and treat altitude sickness. If you fly to a high altitude, take it easy for a day or two after you arrive. Don’t ever exert yourself and take lots of breaks. Drink extra fluids and stay warm. Avoid sedatives, asprin, codeine and alcohol. If you are climbing, go slow, don’t sleep more that 450m (1,500ft) higher the day before you go. If you do develop symptoms, do not go higher.
