ADACEL and Pertussis Vaccine Clinic in Toronto
Many vaccinated children become susceptible to pertussis in adolescence or adulthood because the effectiveness of the vaccination fades over time. An increasing number of adolescents and adults now have fading immunity and are susceptible to pertussis infection. These adolescents and adults act as the main reservoir of pertussis infection and are a major source of infection for your infants.
Although infants should receive their first pertussis immunization at 2 months, adequate levels of immunity do not develop until the third injection has been received at 6 months. Infants, therefore, are extremely vulnerable to infection from their parents, older siblings or caregivers.
ADACEL - the first vaccine formulation containing a pertussis component approved in Canada for immunization of adolescents and adults- is indicated for the prevention of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis in adolescents and adults aged 11 to 54 years.
Vaccinations of adolescents and adults reduce the incidence in this population, and may indirectly protect infants as well. Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NAC) now recommends that adolescents should be immunized against pertussis.
