Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine Clinic in Toronto
Vaccines are the best way to prevent some very serious infections. Canadian Pediatric Society and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization strongly recommend routine immunization. The MMR vaccine is a three-in-one needle that contains the vaccines that protect against measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). It should be given to children soon after their first birthday and again around the time they begin school (between 4 and 6 years of age). It can also be given to adults.
MEASLES Vaccine
Measles is a serious infection. It causes high fever, cough and a rash. Measles lasts for 1 to 2 weeks. It is often complicated by ear infections or pneumonia. Measles can also be complicated by encephalitis which often causes death in 1 in 3,000 cases. In very rare cases, measles is complicated by a disease call SSPE, a very severe and always fatal brain infection. Before measles vaccine was used widely, almost all children got measles. Now, because of the routine used of vaccine, very few children get measles in Canada. SSPE has almost complicated disappeared. Measles vaccine protects more than 90% and is required by law for all children attending school in Ontario. Protection from measles after getting the vaccine is probably life-long.
MUMPS Vaccine
Mumps can cause fever, headaches and a swollen face. The swelling is caused by an infection of the salivary glands. Mumps can cause meningitis, an infection of the fluid and lining covering the brain and spinal cord. About 1 in ever by 10 people with mumps gets meningitis. Fortunately, mumps meningitis is usually mild. Mumps can cause deafness in some children. Mumps can cause very painful, swollen testicles in teenage boys and men which may cause sterility. Mumps can cause very painful infection of the ovaries in women. The mumps vaccine provides life-long protection for 95 percent of those vaccinated.
RUBELLA (German Measles) Vaccine
Rubella is very dangerous for pregnant women. If a woman gets rubella in the early part of a pregnancy, it is very Likely that her baby will die or be severely handicapped. The most common handicaps are blindness, deafness, mental retardation and heart defects. Rubella is usually a mild illness in children. Rubella may cause fever, sore throat, and swollen glands in the neck. As many as one in five teenage and adult women with rubella get aches and pains and swelling of the joints. It can also cause temporary blood clotting problems. Rubella vaccine provides life-long protection in about 98% of those vaccinated.
